Being a freelance Wedding Hair and Makeup Artist involves travelling to various locations. A bride’s home, hotel or wedding venue. As I am supplying, I have to bring the kit. Working in London does not always make it easy if the wedding is in central London as getting there on the tube is much easier than driving. However, that means you have to carry your kit. I am lucky that 80% of the time, I am able to go in my car but even that still involves a lot of transportation.
When arranging a trial and meeting the bride for the first time you have to be prepared for whatever hairstyle they may be requesting. Therefore, you have to take everything! My standard hair kit includes
- Hair straighteners
- Curling wand
- Tail Comb
- Backcombing brush
- Heated rollers- extra rollers- hair clips to secure the rollers in the hair
- Kirby grips in every colour and every length
- Hair clips
- A rounded blow dry brush
- A Hairdryer
- A mirror
Now as you can imagine these weigh A LOT. I put all these in a sturdy suitcase that is easy to move around on wheels. If I am lucky, I sometimes get someone offering to carry it up the tube stairs for me. (It still makes me smile at how surprised they are when they try to lift it up and feel the weight. As they obviously think, I was being a weakling)
This is slightly easier as I have it all packed up in one large kit bag that I take whenever I am doing someone’s makeup so I always have everything I need. The makeup is packed into individual clear bags to make it easier for me to see where everything is.
- Different shades and brands.
- Concealer- A palette of different shades
- Various palettes of eye shadow
- A palette of blush shades
- Black and brown gel eyeliner
- False eyelashes/ glue
- Cotton buds
- Many lipsticks and lip-glosses with matching lip liners
Many brides ask me what foundation brands I use. The answer is many different ones! Finding the right foundation can be tricky. Whether you have oily, dry or acne-prone skin, each foundation sits differently.
Therefore, it is very important for me to carry a variety. Currently in my kit is Charlotte Tilbury, No7, Arbonne and Laura Mercier. They all create finishes from sheer, full coverage, matte and dewy.
